Even twenty years ago around 50 separate corporations owned most of the global media but by absorbing or 'buying out' the competition these corporations have grown smaller but larger, essentially reducing the number of 'voices' the public hears. What keeps them in control of their monopolies is that they own numerous smaller subsidiary media companies such as newspapers, radio stations, magazines and companies that provide electronic consumer products. They also got into the internet on the ground floor and own such websites as Wikipedia and the popular Facebook.
I couldn't agree more, buddy. I've watched as you've struggled on Facebook, and been attacked, and everything you said about the U.S. is true. I do think social media gives freedom to the haters behind a mask of anonymity, but I also think these are tough times, and many people are hating simply because they are afraid and frustrated, and their meaner sides are exposed. When will it stop? I have no clue, but I'm dead tired of it.
A lot of people, including President Obama, insist that it will be different next time. But, for anything to be different, some sort of budget bargain will need to be reached before Christmas. Even without the tea party faction in the House Republican caucus, that would be a tough job. Democrats are going to want some new revenue to offset the deep budget cuts Republicans will demand, and new revenue means raising taxes, which, for today's Republicans, is the deepest heresy.
This leads me to my present home. We just bought an older colonial style home in Virginia with standard height ceilings and lots of detail like dental crown molding and substantial chair rails that will involve a lot of painting and some updating, but this time I have learned my lesson and will stick with the tried and true Pottery Barn style, shabby chic will have to remain on the drawing board.

Spirit of Christmas, The - I've actually seen this one - I can't remember if it was on Lifetime or the Hallmark Channel. This hardened woman goes to stay at an Inn to sell it, but ends up meeting (and maybe falling in love!?) with a handsome ghost from the past (an actual ghost, like "boo" not just a ghost from her past).
