Christmas is officially over, which mean it's time lose the sugar cookie-induced pounds. The nutritional highlight of the diet is protein. Where calories, vitamins and minerals may be missing- protein is a priority. Protein is included heavily in all three meals every day. When following a low-calorie diet, protein can really help your body preserve your muscle and metabolism, boosting your weight loss success. This is a positive aspect of the diet.
See when I tell my elite level CrossFit clients that we need to periodize their nutrition, theirs no argument or confusion. It makes sense. We have periods of time (in-season) where we need to prioritize performance, short-term recovery and the individual fuel demands required for competitions that may follow week after week or month after month.
Eat micronutrient dense foods every day. The most nutrient-rich foods are pasture-raised organ meat, wild-caught sardines, and low-carbohydrate vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli. During early pregnancy and prior to conception, foods higher in folate, such as liver and dark leafy greens, are essential. Vitamin D (high in beef liver and sardines), iodine (high in seaweed and raw cheeses), and DHA (high in sardines and fatty fish) are also essential.
