I just finished watching the third episode of the Real World DC, the latest installment in the long running reality series. As I stated earlier, Guattari was profoundly affected by his encounter with and participation in the Free Radio movements in Italy and France. Yes, you can leave things mysterious near the beginning of your story but - at some point- your main character (and, by extension, your readers) must know what rules the supernatural evil in your story has to follow. If you fail to do this, then your story will end up being slightly contrived and your readers may feel cheated.
There are plenty of TV shows I love that do nothing more than make me laugh. The Daily Show, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Modern Family are three that immediately come to mind. But Mad Men is different. It's pretty much the only drama I watch. For years I persuaded myself that by watching Mad Men (which in case you just moved here from North Korea is about a Madison Avenue advertising firm in the 1960's) I was learning more about business. But let's face it: after four seasons of dutifully watching the show I can admit that I haven't learned much about running a business. I have learned, however, that smoking five packs of cigarettes a day, regularly drinking bourbon before 10AM and having an affair with my daughter's elementary school teacher (and 817 other women) may very well get me in trouble. I've also learned not to have a have a sofa in my office. Sofas can be a bad influence in the workplace.
As in today's society, although it wasn't easy, it wasn't impossible to move from one class status to another. An orphan could do an apprentice and learn a trade in a middle class professional, or alternatively a wealthy family could fall on hard times and end up becoming unemployed and homeless.
